Impressions/Ideas/Challenges

This is a cute musical about a cow that can’t “MOO.” Everyone in the barnyard is trying to figure out a way to get her to “MOO.” The suggested age indication claims K-4. I think this would be a hard sell for intermediate students….even for an all-school show. It’s perfectly suited for your K-2 clientele!

Scenery:  A barnyard, with barnyard items

Props: “MOO” sign (opt.)

Costumes:  Can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. I’m NOT a big fan of things on top of my students’ heads during a musical show. It’s so difficult to space children so their parents can see their face on risers as it is, let alone with something protruding ABOVE their heads to cover the faces of their classmates behind them.

  • Chicks: Yellow
  • Ducks: White/Yellow
  • Sheep: White/Gray
  • Pigs: Pink
  • Mule: only ONE…Gray/Black
  • Cow: Black/White
  • Little Bo Peep:
  • Farmer:
  • Old MacDonald:
  • Farmer’s Wife & Old MacDonald’s Wife:
  • Rooster: only ONE…Red
  • Chorus: Farmer/Plaid/Cowboy clothing

Individual Song Information/Suggestions:

E-I-E-I OOPS!: Country Rock version of “Old MacDonald” with a little bit jazzier rhythms. This tune introduces the main animals of the show. It features two-part optional harmonies.

  • Adaptation idea: It has a lengthy introduction, have students enter the stage during the long instrumental section.

Ham It Up!: Features the PIGS! Includes a unison duet with two main pigs. Vaudeville-like, with corny jokes during each instrumental break. It also incorporates three rhythmic solos and a DANCE interlude. This fun song ends with a solo “SNORT” and group “OINK! OINK!”

  • Adaptation idea: Substitute in jokes the students come up with instead of the ones Jacobson/Higgins wrote!

Lost Sheep: Sad country Waltz featuring the sheep! Optional 2-part harmonies to teach to different sections. It also features two spoken solos.

Cute Chicks: Features the ducks….NOOOO the Chicks! DUH! This tune incorporates 2-part independent singing.

  • Adaptation idea: During measures 25-31, have students split to create “conversational singing.” Boys could begin at m. 25 with girls responding and then roles are reversed at m. 28 with the boys doing the responding.

The Whole Barnyard Is Singin’!: The Hoe-Down! This finale has a lengthy solo opportunity to be sung over the animals creating their sounds to help the cow “Moo.” Brings back the original “Old MacDonald” from the opening number. One Bow is indicated in measure 75.

  • Adaptation ideas: Measures 11-29 Split the solo up into FOUR different shorter solo opportunities and possibly omit the animal sounds while they are performing.  Add MORE bowing…earlier in the song, so that in measure 75 the cow can “MOO” one last, triumphant time!
